Projet terminé : Handbook of rehabilitation for Old Jeddah, Saoudi Arabia

The handbook of rehabilitation for Old Jeddah, conclusion of a first workstage with the city of Jeddah, has just been published in french and english. Its arab version will be released in the next few weeks.
The publication of this handbook concludes 3 years of work for the "Urban Development and regeneration of Historical Jeddah" run by the Dr Adnan Abbas Adas. The goal of this work was to be able to transmit a global intervention methodology on heritage build in the historical center while considering these specific parameters, technicals (used materials, used techniques) or architecturals (nature of the houses, compositions and running of the buildings).
The intervention techniques described take into account the fact that the old Jeddah is a candidate for the inscription on the Unesco's World Heritage List.
The goal of our work in Jeddah was not to only publish a handbook, but was mainly the transmission of the required knowledge to achieve the rehabilitation work on historicals buildings. The handbook is only here to conclude, to formalize or to testify of this transmission job.
In this way, several training sessions were achieved on site, for the workers and the supervisors teams, architects and engineers. The themes of the intervention were :
- the structural reparation works (connected floors, cracks sewing for instance),
- the reinforcement of old masonry,
- Lime coatings and paintings,
- realisation in a teaching construction site of a facade finishing coat, with the sgraffito technique,
- carpentry,
- the old Jeddah rehabilitation project.
Our work in Jeddah continues with a technical assistance contract with the city, in the area of the ongoing works, and through the realisation of an exhibition aimed at the general audience, founded by the Department of Cultural and Cooperation Action of the french General Consulate in Jeddah.
