Time eat them, turn them to rust, broke them. To preserve and restore we must know the qualities, the principles of composition and the principles of construction.
The "in situ" reparation is often the only solution to conserve most of the elements in order to reduce the costs. All the studied techniques will have that aspects as a main target.
