Secrets of decorative painting

A painter-decorator needs to be acquainted with traditional techniques: glue-based and egg-based tempera, etc. and their appearance, so as to be able to
choose, among all possible techniques, both traditional or modern, the one that will serve most effectively each decorative project.

The use of pigments, binding agents, their specific properties, a knowledge of the techniques,
from the rarest to the most common, will allow him to respond appropriately to increasingly demanding and refined decorative needs.

Program

You will study various pigments and other traditional coloring agents, starting from written documentary sources and samples. You will learn to select and to master the use of the binding agents used in decorative arts: glue, egg, waxes, resins, caseins, and oils.

You will prepare surfaces such as wood, textiles, paper, metals, glass, and you will create samples, including a painted wooden panel (a detail of an Italian Primitive) and an 18th-century decoration composed of painting under glass, with the application of gold leaf with mordant.
