Draping

Draping is an element which is constantly represented in mural
painting:
- the clothes of the characters in mural paintings
of the Roman period and the Middle Ages.
- the large drapes which hang over the balustrades
and openings in the tradition of 15th and 18th century Italian
painting.
- 19th century Romantic style drapes and décors
(opera).
Draping, the perfect exercise of trompe l’oeil,
was often used in the foreground in order to emphasise the passage
between the real and the unreal. Creating a draping is a painting
and a modelling exercise which allows the student to learn the
technique for giving the illusion of cloth and its movements by
means of the observation of shadow and light, textures and transparency.
