Consulting on a project in Hungary:
the monastery of Tihany 1 2 3 |
The Tihany monastery, on the Balaton lake, is the
most visited historic monument in Hungary.
During the restoration
of the cloister, the four facades, that had been mutilated during
an unfortunate renovation during the 1950's, were to be restored.
After they were freed of all finish, their plastering and decoration
required pre-project study and planning.
An archeological study undertaken with the Hungarian
authorities led to the decision to recreate the state of the walls
as t hey were in the 18th century. This called for a large molded
cornice of plastering attached to corbelled bricks, very simple window
openings, and a smoothly troweled plastering then lime-painted.
