Traditional Mediterranean Architecture |
The historic richness of these sub consequent societies, and their spreading throughout the Mediterranean area produced a vast array of cities, villages and houses whose renewal is unending. The processes of transformation - formerly slow and limited, were definitely accelerated with industrialisation and an invasion of modern materials and techniques - massively overwhelming in the past few years -, allied to the outbreak of tourism, all of which raise many urgent questions and issues.
Traditional architecture is considered here as a transmissible heritage and a real-estate value: worth and use. It is a place of meeting, working and resting: an organic space which always holds the activities and everyday life of Mediterranean people. It is a significant factor for social and economic development, and nourishes the identity of its peoples. Rehabilitation and sometimes protection are essential to keep this heritage alive: our richness and diversity of landscapes, our ways of living in a spatial and temporal continuity.
